Night Flight Study is one of the three pastels that spent the summer in a pastel salon in France. Also, my work on the whole received Le Prix Pour la Créativité, the award for creativity. Before I learned of all this, I created a few different pieces based on the same subject as Night Flight Study. I have them with me at Art in the Pearl this weekend. This is my first show in Portland in six years, and I'm looking forward to being back. I've heard glowing reports about this show from so many artists; they can't seem to find enough good things to say about it. Sounds like the perfect last show of the season. And since Portland seems to be the microbrewery capitol of the Northwest, there will be plenty for Paul to do, too (when he's not helping me sell art, of course). Nice!

AHD is a wonderfully juried little show in a beautiful---yet convenient---setting. Art booths wind alongside a stream just a few steps from the Shops at the Old Mill in Bend. Since it falls on the weekend before Labor Day, many artists do this show on their way to the Sausalito Art Festival or in my case, Art in the Pearl. So if you can't make it to either of those famously top-notch shows, you can find many of the same amazing artists in Bend.
I've made some new work especially for Bend this year, including some of my ponderosa pine images like Storm's Passing (above). I've also made some new miniature works, including a few landscapes and a tiny pine. Come see these and all of my work this weekend!

[singlepic id=519 w=460 h=320 float=] Yet again, I am wishing I could be two places. This time it's Sun Valley Center Arts and Crafts Festival and the French Pastels Salon International going head to head.
While I am required to attend the first one, I can't really afford to go to the second one, so it all works out. Plus, Sun Valley is one of my perennial favorites. Ketchum feels a bit like a second home with all the little traditions that have evolved around the show. I'll bring pastels and oils once again this year, including Moonflight, above---appropriately based on a small pastel that makes its debut in Dordogne this weekend. Souhaitez moi bonne chance!

This is one of those wish-I-could-be-two-places weekends. The Bellevue Arts Museum Artsfair starts Friday in Bellevue, WA. I'm so excited to see my Seattle-area collectors and find homes for some new pieces like Shiva Luna (above). Naturally, also on Friday, the Peter Pan Invitational opens at the Tinman Gallery here in Spokane. I'd love to see my cicada "fairy" wings (Dreams of Moonlit Flight, left) in what I'm sure will be a fantastic group show. But alas.

[singlepic id=515 w=320 h=460 float=left] At the moment, it's craziness. The building where I paint is undergoing some major changes, and it's keeping me very busy. More on that later, but let's just say I'm being pulled in a lot of directions. I'm also working to promote the Little Spokane River Artist Studio Tour, which I suspect will be here before I even know what happened!
Thankfully, I do have a few shows coming up to keep me focused on painting. The Salem Art Fair and Festival is just three weeks away. Two weeks after that the Bellevue Arts Museum Artsfair. And, that same Friday (July 29) opens the Tinman Gallery's Peter Pan Invitational. I've used the Peter Pan show as an excuse to try painting a subject that has always fascinated me: insects. Which probably doesn't make a lot of sense on the face of it, but for me, nothing conjured up visions of fairies better than cicada wings. Never having painted insects before, I tried a sketch before starting my piece for the show. The result: Cicada Study, left.
The cicadas were a fascinating challenge, and I may work with them more in the future. In the meantime, Cicada Study will be available at an art fair this July. I hope to see you out there!

[singlepic id=434 w=460 h=360 float=] I'm not sure what happened, but it's nearly art fair season! The last of the jury notices have come in, and I've finalized my schedule.
As it turns out, all of my 2011 shows will be in the Northwest. And with gas at $4/per gallon, I'm happy not to be pulling a fully loaded trailer on any 2,000 mile round trips! I'll be doing some of my usual shows: Artfest in Spokane, Bellevue Arts Museum artsfair, Sun Valley Center Arts and Crafts Festival, and Art in the High Desert in Bend, Oregon.
I've also made some changes. I'll be trying the Salem Art Fair and Festival for the first time in 2011. And, I am excited to announce that I will appear for the first time at Art in the Pearl in Portland, Oregon! I've heard wonderful things about this show and have been wanting to try it for years. It's exciting, yet bittersweet---to appear at the Pearl, I made the difficult decision not to do the Sausalito Art Festival for the first time since 2007. With so few really excellent shows in the Northwest and northern California, why do two of the best have to be on the same weekend?
Whining aside, I can't wait to get started on this year's shows! Only three more weeks to wait... hope to see you out there!
[singlepic id=506 w=460 h=400 float=] Ascension 2, my commissioned work for Providence Regional Medical Center, is completed and approved! The piece, pictured above, will be shipped off for framing in a few short weeks. I'm so excited to (hopefully) see it in its new home. It has been a wonderful opportunity and experience.
And now that I'm back in the groove, I see more oil paintings in my future... my oils juried into more shows than I expected this summer, and I need to make more. My summer fair schedule will be finalized in the next few weeks, so please check back!

First and second, I have been accepted to two great art fairs: one " old" favorite and one new to me. Art in the High Desert (Bend, Oregon) invited me to bring my pastels and oils for the third year in a row. This is an amazing, exclusive, high-quality show and I am thrilled to once again take part. Then I found out my pastels and oils and I would travel to Salem, Oregon for the Salem Art Fair and Festival for the first time this July. The new director received rave reviews for her transformation of this show to a top-notch, artist friendly venue. The list of 2011 artists boasts names you might see at shows like Cherry Creek and Sausalito. I can't wait! (Check out my summer schedule to date on my Art Fairs 2011 page here.)
Third, and very exciting for me, I received a major commission from Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, Washington. Honestly, it has been so long since I submitted work for this project, I had completely forgotten about it! Then out of the blue appeared an email saying I made the final round. A week ago today came the good news: Providence wants a large-scale oil painting (3' x 4') based on my earlier oil, Ascension, pictured above. I'm already well into it---the painting ships in early May, rolled, no less! Fast turnaround for an oil painting, especially one that needs to be dry, but I'll make it.
Not too shabby for one Thursday-to-Thursday week. I remember saying not too long ago that I could really use some good news. Well, there you have it.

First things first: I am more thrilled than ever to announce that I made it into the Bellevue Arts Museum artsfair once again this year. And I only got in with pastels. Why so thrilled? Let's just say it's been an interesting year in jurying. And it's barely begun.
Me vs. The Jury: The Paranoia
As you might know, I was rejected from Cherry Creek again this year. I also re-applied to Art on the Square in Belleville, Illinois. I did that show last year and loved it, but alas, no joy this time around. So by the time Bellevue, my go-to show, announced jury results, I was shaking in my boots. Of course, Cherry Creek and Belleville are longshot shows---small, top-rated, highly competitive. Getting in once is no guarantee of getting in again, ever.* I've consistently juried in to Bellevue, but even so, those rejections had me worried. Did I choose the right images? Would the jurors, who appeared to be experts in fine craft more than 2D art, appreciate my pastels?
Art Fairs vs. Artists: The Dilemma
So yeah, I got lucky and made it into Bellevue. But here's the thing: not every artist did. And by "not every artist," I mean amazing, talented people who have done the show for years and count on it for a good bit of their annual income. We (artists) all find shows that work for us---our style fits the show, our work is at a level that consistently juries in, our customers show up and buy. But we can never get too comfortable. Far more artists who apply to any given show don't make it in than do. For shows like Cherry Creek, the odds are less than one in ten. For Bellevue, it's maybe three in ten. We can't just "do the show" that provides our best income each year. We submit our four best pieces of artwork, cross our fingers and wait. And hope.
From the show's perspective, it's necessary. Look at it this way: have you visited a favorite show and seen the same artists year after year? I know I have. It makes me crazy, never seeing anything new. If nothing ever changes, customers get bored and the show dies a slow death. To keep things fresh, shows have to bring in new faces. But each show has a finite number of spots, so for every new artist, there's a veteran artist sitting at home. In the big picture, both the shows and the artists benefit from change. But this is our livelihood---what artist wants to be the one sacrificed?
The Economy vs. Artists: It's Not Helping
Just to add a little extra challenge to the art fair life, enter our awesome economy! Don't get me wrong, people are still buying art. I'm pleasantly surprised by how much. But there's definitely less to go around. One result is galleries failing in great numbers. So what happens to all those fantastic career artists who lose their galleries? Many turn to art fairs. We need our best shows more than ever, and the jury odds just got steeper.
Artists vs. Ourselves: Fix it!
On the other hand, what if we artists do get into our favorite shows year after year after year? If it ain't broke, why fix it, right? (If I find a specific style of work or set of jury images that gets me into shows, I'm afraid to do anything else.) If the unnatural selection of the jury process leaves us comfortably in place, where's our incentive to grow and change? Aside, I suppose, from the gradual decline in sales that might come from stagnation---and that is way too easy to blame on other factors. So with that in mind, I've decided to take this uncertainty as a challenge to keep things fresh, do my best work and stay in the game. Meanwhile, I've got about five more jury results coming down in the next several weeks. Fingers crossed!
*and let's face it, shooting off my mouth here and on various forums may not exactly be giving me that winning edge...

The show and sale, founded by Harold Balazs, benefits the Mead Education Foundation. This year Eye for Art will feature 34 wonderful professional artists, including Harold himself. The show runs from noon to 5pm at Mead High School in Spokane. Cost is $10 per person or $25 per family at the door, and there will be live music and hors d'oeuvres.

[singlepic id=501 w=320 h=460 float=left] It's Art Show Limbo Time again, that usually painful two-month waiting period between the first and iffiest art fair jury results (Cherry Creek, et al.) and the rest of them. Skunked again by the C.C. jury, I am naturally questioning my very worth as an artist, at least until the next bit of good news. This is pretty much an annual event.
My coping strategy is to start work on next year's application a tad early. Since I actually did Cherry Creek a few years ago, I have a successful set of images to compare to my less successful set. Although the pieces are all from the same body of work, there are definite differences. The newer pieces are more literal, caught up in detail. The earlier set was quieter, simpler, more abstract.
Cherry Creek is a show that leans toward a modern aesthetic, so that makes sense. But they also have a whopping eight Drawing spots and receive literally thousands of applications each year. There is no magic bullet. Juries are always subjective. The same images that got me into the coveted Cherry Creek in 2008 won me a rejection from Boise Art in the Park. You just never know.
Fortunately, my first effort in the Jury Project has an ulterior motive. Waxing Wing, above, is not just a contender for 2012 Jury Image #3. It is the first piece destined for the Salon in St. Aulaye, France this summer. One of many good things coming up that I should probably be thinking about instead. Onward.
